FROM HERE TO EAR

If there is a model for Boursier-Mougenot’s operations, it is perhaps to be found in natural systems. In one past work, From Here to Ear (1999), the artist memorably used a flock of finches corralled within a framework of amplified steel piano wires to build an acoustical structure whose form was determined by the behavioral patterns of the birds. His use of finches was not as fortuitous as it might seem; it was Galapagos finches that elegantly demonstrated Darwin’s theories of evolution. As with the biological processes of natural selection, the sonic patterns of Boursier-Mougenot’s systems branch and divide, randomly mutate, dissolve and reform in a potentially open-ended flow. The symmetries of greater complexity arising from pure simplicity are always possible – although never assured. Whereas Cage’s practice was imitative of chance operations found in nature, Boursier-Mougenot’s method lies primarily in the transliteration of natural structures, revealing to the ear certain realities that remain invisible to the eye. The artist acts as the ‘first cause’, putting certain laws and systems in motion which he then allows to exist and evolve autonomously, rather than merely using chaos and dissonance as compositional models.  ~ from Frieze.com. Just devastating news.  Sad day.  RIP Master McQueen.

McQueen recounted in an interview that he once wrote the words “I am a cunt” into the sleeve lining of a suit he was working on for Prince Charles.

Discovery of snow flakes. No two alike.

My little pretty kitty Bits discovered snow today.  I can thank the “Snowpocalypse” hitting the nation’s capitol today/tonight/tomorrow.  I was lucky enough to capture the momentous moment!

It’s tough work discovering new things.  She laid on her back to contemplate snow…I told her no two flakes are alike and I think it just was too much…

Snow falling…

I’ve been submerged in snow.  When I left the East Coast I had just lived through the beautiful blizzard of ’09.

Now I’m in New Mexico for Christmas and there is snow everywhere!  I’d like to snap some photos of my own, but for now, here are some snaps I found.  I hope it is snowing where you find yourself!

Have a fantastic holiday!

Vincent Darre’s Paris apartment and salon are TDF.

I’m on the hunt now for some 8th grade biology and human anatomy inspired pieces.

Darre’s use of primary colors is inspiring.

It’s a great example of how to work color in with darker, gothic design.

His bone collection of furniture is brilliant…I’ll be working some of it into future design school projects!

And I love how he has ladders up against the book shelves… creates a mini library feel.  Eggggcellent.

The animals, considering themselves exploited and misrepresented by man, hold a secret nocturnal meeting in the Jardin des Plantes zoo in Paris. The fox convinces them that their best weapon is intelligence, and they desire to produce a book of, by and for animals, to be illustrated by Grandville (as an “honorary animal”) and to be published by the sympathetics Hetzel and Paulin.  The bulk of Les Animaux thus consists of the “animals” literary contributions.

A Love Like Ours

RIP Jeanne-Claude.

I felt fortunate when I was able to visit the Gates in NYC’s Central Park in the winter of 2005.  For a period of time prior, I had my love affair with the collaborative works of magical Christo.  It started when I saw photos of their pink islands…then it grew and matured with photos and videos of the blue and yellow Umbrellas scattered along the hillsides in the US and Japan.

The couple gave us largely wrapped presents and allowed us to share in the glorious process of wrapping nature and man-made structures.  Bringing in the community to share and become part of the work itself.  I like to imagine what they were like in private and it makes me smile.

Whimsical. Whimsical. Whimsical.

From their site:

Christo and Jeanne-Claude met in Paris, France in November, 1958, sharing the same date of birth and have worked together for 51 years creating temporary works of art.

This is the latest project they were working on, Over the River, still a work in progress on the Arkansas River in CO.

Some of the funnest videos show us the projects from start to finish.

Here is a sped up start to finish view of the Wrapped Reichstag in Germany, 1995.
