If there is a model for Boursier-Mougenot’s operations, it is perhaps to be found in natural systems. In one past work, From Here to Ear (1999), the artist memorably used a flock of finches corralled within a framework of amplified steel piano wires to build an acoustical structure whose form was determined by the behavioral patterns of the birds. His use of finches was not as fortuitous as it might seem; it was Galapagos finches that elegantly demonstrated Darwin’s theories of evolution. As with the biological processes of natural selection, the sonic patterns of Boursier-Mougenot’s systems branch and divide, randomly mutate, dissolve and reform in a potentially open-ended flow. The symmetries of greater complexity arising from pure simplicity are always possible – although never assured. Whereas Cage’s practice was imitative of chance operations found in nature, Boursier-Mougenot’s method lies primarily in the transliteration of natural structures, revealing to the ear certain realities that remain invisible to the eye. The artist acts as the ‘first cause’, putting certain laws and systems in motion which he then allows to exist and evolve autonomously, rather than merely using chaos and dissonance as compositional models. ~ from Frieze.com. My cute friend from across the pond, Paul, shared this video with me. it’s so rad and retro.
I didn’t know about Italian singer Adriano Celentano or his hot wife (the blond in the video doin her thang) Claudia Mori.
The lyrics are pure gibberish, often described as sounding like American English as heard by a non–English-speaker.
Adriano and his wife perform together here. musical magic. choreographic magic. and those outfits TDF.

Love this song. Love both Grizzly Bear and Beach House.
Man this video makes me crave summer. summer outfits. summer sky. and that studded blazer on Victoria.
check out this performance. simply gorg. stick around for the end bit, Victoria covers TLC’s Waterfalls.

I’m feeling old footage of the Stones rocking out. It must have something to do with the above photo of me pulling a Mick Jagger on New Years Eve. Mick may very well have set the tone for rocking with your pout out…
“I have the right to give stupid answers to stupid questions.”

I’m mildly obsessed with these guys…well…maybe not mildly…I’m utterly in love with their music and artistic expression.
I Lost You is a heart wrenching tune. I found this video that mixes it with old footage. It is brilliant.
Canadian Girl is another pretty, heart churning tune on You & Me. I love that they love their horns….and Hamilton’s voice kills.

Just a few more days!
I Love this song and it always manages to throw me in the spirit.
Santa baby, I wanna yacht,
And really that’s not a lot,
Been an angel all year,
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight.
and not shamelessly, one of my most faves:

Interpol reminds me of my youthful 20’s. Not that I’m no longer youthful…though when I think on it, I no longer have some of the same qualities I once had.
To quote Oscar Wilde, “I am not young enough to know everything.”
Turn On The Bright Lights was a pivotal moment in Indie Rock, as well as in the life of this here dame.
I can’t tell you how many nights I spent dancing my arse off to Obstacle 1.

Digging through my old files, I found some fantastic photos of the band.
You know that classic question: If you were stranded on an Island which albums would you take?
Well, I’d surely bring Turn On The Bright Lights with me and hope that I’d also packed some black eyeliner and a black and white and red striped get up.
They certainly had a major influence on my catalog for fashion and music.
Around the same time I was watching Blow Up for the first time and falling in love with Bobby Dylan and the Velvet Underground. I visited the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Hallelujah.
Reading and listening to interviews with he band turned me on to some great film and literature.
I saw The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover…and read Atonement…after listening to their interview with Bob Boilen of NPR and All Songs Considered. All this before I started working for NPR!
Oh and Daniel Kessler, if you’re reading this, I still think we’d make a perfect match.
