Parents Were Awesome… Before They Were Parents

NPR’s The Picture Show is always a great source of fun photo-related content.

The most recent, a highlight on Eliot Glazer’s Tumblr My Parents Were Awesome.

You can submit photos of your own Momma and Pappa Bears.

Here’s one of my mom and dad I found digging around

…taken shortly before they married

at the New Mexico State Fair.  Handsome couple, eh?  Loving both of their hairstyles.

It’s so funny to see how fashionable and hip these parents were.

You can see more on Eliot’s Tumblr…some of my faves:

I’ve always asked myself, how can being a parent change people so much? Why do I feel my parents were normal people who transformed in a way to forget everything they were once they become parents?

Oh man- it’s hilarious checking out my parents old pictures….. there was one with my dad in a pair of white bell bottoms with zippers that went all the way up the sides of the legs- and my mom gave me a tmi story of why she liked those pants…..gross lol.

This is such a great idea for a site. I always thought my parents were fashionable and I was always proud to introduce them to others. They instilled in me that there is a time for work and a time for play. They were very supportive and I’ve got some good memories of us having fun together.

Girl, I LOVE your blog!! You have managed to attain your own sense of self, which is rare on this earth. Keep it, cherish it, and don’t ever let anyone tell you who you are.
PS-I should send you a picture of me before I had kids. I was ROCKIN!! LOL

Very good and thought provoking. Like some of your other readers, I’ll have to have a delve into the parental picture archives too. I suspect I’ll find a lot of Aran jumpers.

I love these photos!!! Isn’t it amazing to think these people became Parents with a capital P? The young pictures really humanize them. Thank you for posting. I am going to check out the rest of your blog — I like your sensibility!

I love the top photo. there is so much subtext there. It reminds me a an old photo of Richard Brautigan (great author). Think it was the cover of Pill vs Springhill Mine Disaster.

anyhow, great work. Am doing some more reading and digging around your site. Hope you don’t mind.

That first couple are hilarious… they must be posing like that for a laugh?

Cool! I like how in the 70s, 80s, all of us thought we had to match! Same colors, patterns, like above!

wow! nice photos! funny a bit but really nice!
yes, parents change much after they become parents… strange, but it is the fact. so, what does it mean? not to become a parent? this is not a variant… so?

Great photos. Unfortunately, I don’t have photos like that of my parents, but I enjoyed the ones you posted here. When I get more time, I’ll have a look at the rest of your blog.
