I watch Bill Maher on a pretty regular basis and I’m always so happy when Cornel West is on the guest panel.
Of course the Dr. is extremely wise and well spoken…and witty…but admittedly it’s his style that first caught my attention. I don’t know how he’s been left off Best Dressed Lists…but he’s definitely on the top of mine.
With his disheveled hair, black spectacles, pocket watch, cuff links and distinguished suits, he’s always quite dapper and uniquely his own.

from his site:
about dr. cornel west
One of America’s most provocative public intellectuals, Cornel West has been a champion for racial justice since childhood. His writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the traditions of the black Baptist Church, progressive politics, and jazz. The New York Times has praised his “ferocious moral vision.”
Currently the Class of 1943 Professor with the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University, West burst onto the national scene in 1993 with his bestselling book, Race Matters, a searing analysis of racism in American democracy. Race Matters has become a contemporary classic, selling more than a half a million copies to date. In addition, West has published 18 other books and has edited 13 texts and has received more than 20 honorary degrees.
West earned two bachelor’s degrees from Harvard in three years, magna cum laude. Martin Kilson, one of his professors there, describes West as “the most intellectually aggressive and highly cerebral student I have taught.” After earning his Ph.D. at Princeton, he became a professor of religion and director of the Afro-American Studies program there. West has also taught at Union Theological Seminary, Yale, Harvard, and the University of Paris.
In his book, “Democracy Matters,” West analyzes the arrested development of democracy both in America and in the crisis-ridden Middle East. In his latest book, Hope on a Tightrope, he offers courageous commentary on issues that affect the lives of all Americans. Themes include Race, Leadership, Faith, Family, Philosophy, and Love and Service.
He also has produced 3 albums his latest CD, Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations is a collection of socially conscience music featuring collaborations with Prince, Outkast, Jill Scott, Talib Kweli and KRS-ONE. West also offers commentary weekly on The Tavis Smiley Show from PRI.
West was an influential force in developing the storyline for the popular Matrix movie trilogy and has served as its official spokesperson, as well as playing a recurring role in the final two films.

Jennifer’s Body did nothing to make me change my mind about crushing on Megan. In fact, it made me crush even more. Girl Crush. Girl Crush…not sure how long I’ll be crushing…but honestly, after watching this, can you question it? Even the so called ‘indie hipster’ mag Nylon has fallen captive and put her on their October cover.

I’m so giddy to see Nine. The cast, costumes, set design and sultry Penelope Cruz…SWOOOOOOOOOOOON. Having just watched 8 1/2 has also made me especially intrigued as to how Rob Marshall will translate this story. The shots of Fergie on the beach are so very Fellini. Ever since I heard Penelope bust that strong voice out in Volver, I’ve been dying to hear more. We’ll get to see the trained ballerina do her thang.
“NINE” is a vibrant and provocative musical that follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie) and his mother (Sophia Loren). The film is directed by Rob Marshall (CHICAGO). The original 1982 Broadway production of “NINE,” with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, won five Tony Awards including Best Musical.

And thankfully Almodovar and Ms. Cruz have teamed up again with Los Abrazos Rotos.
HELL YES. It’s like Christmas today – Just picked up the new Lula Mag and now this…awesomeness.
